Ep. 8 Nancy Was Her Own Worst Enemy: Breaking Down Imperfect Women

Nancy Hennessy spent her adult life building something completely different from the childhood she survived. But once she finally had the husband, money, home, status, and family she seemingly wanted, she started making decisions that threatened all of it.

This week on The Bar and the Brain,Tonée Earle and Tay Fawumi continue their Imperfect Women character series by breaking down Nancy Hennessy.

We start with Nancy's childhood and the trauma surrounding her mother and stepfather before looking at how those experiences may have followed her into adulthood. We discuss her marriage to Robert, her feeling that she didn't belong in his wealthy world, the Hennessy family's treatment of her, and why insecurity may have turned into self-sabotage.

Then there's Howard.

Why did Nancy sleep with her best friend's husband when she had other opportunities to cheat? Why did she reconnect with the stepfather who abused her when she needed help getting Howard out of her life? And why did Nancy repeatedly turn toward unhealthy men whenever she felt backed into a corner?

Tonée examines the legal implications of Nancy's relationship with her stepfather, while Tay breaks down Nancy's behavior through a mental-health lens, including PTSD, anxiety, self-esteem, self-sabotage and potentially borderline personality disorder.

We also get into Nancy's complicated relationship with her daughter, Robert's drinking, and the moment Nancy finally “let the mask fall.”
Nancy was messy—but of all three Imperfect Women, was she actually the easiest to understand?
