Ep. 9 Savior Complexes, Emotional Abuse & the Men of Imperfect Women
We've talked about Mary, Eleanor, and Nancy. Now we're finishing our Imperfect Women series with the men—and whew, there's a lot to unpack.
This week on The Bar and the Brain, Tonée Earle and Tay Fawumi break down Howard, Robert, Donovan, Robert's father, and the relationships surrounding the women at the center of the Apple TV series.
Howard and Robert initially seem like completely different men. One is charming, intelligent, and seemingly devoted to his family. The other comes from enormous privilege but struggles with confidence, alcohol, and living in his father's shadow. But as we look closer, some interesting similarities emerge—including the possibility that both men entered their relationships believing they could “save” the women they chose.
We also revisit Howard's relationship with Mary, the power imbalance of a professor pursuing his student, Nancy's affair with Howard, Eleanor's relationship with Robert, and the evidence surrounding Nancy's death.
